A MUDJUR PRAYER RUG
CENTRAL ANATOLIA, FIRST HALF 19TH CENTURY

The red field with a stepped grass-green mihrab arch containing stylised floral motifs flanking ibriqs, a polychrome cross-panel above of reciprocal arrowhead arcading, in an apricot panelled border of polychrome radiating flowerheads between light blue linked lozenge, brown flowerhead and minor zigzag and mill-pattern stripes, areas of wear, slight repiling, tattered lower end with crease lines, similar partly repaired sides with hole
Approximately 6ft.3in. x 4ft.7in. (191cm. x 140cm.)

Warp: white wool, slightly depressed, undulating
Weft: 2 shoots, at times 3, red wool Z1, one and three undulating, the other more so
Pile: wool, Z2, symmetrical inclining to the left, H2.9 x V3.4/cm.
Sides: additional red wool yarn Z2S, at times light blue Z1 bound flatwoven around one additional warp and two additional pairs of warps, main weft on the left side returning around the first of these; on the right side returning between the two warp pairs
Ends: flatwoven with red wool Z1
Remarks: lazy lines, weft adjustments, displaced knotting
