A KHOTAN CARPET
EAST TURKESTAN, MID 19TH CENTURY
The abrashed indigo field with two small flower vases at each end issuing large angular flowering pomegranite trees, in a triple
rose-pink linked flowerhead, brick-red polychrome key-pattern panel and cloud and wave border between minor blue floral meander and plain red and blue stripes, a short kilim strip at each end, very slight repair and repiling, otherwise excellent pile
Approximately 16ft.10in. x 7ft.5in. (513cm. x 226cm.)
Warp: white cotton Z6S, at edges slightly depressed and slightly undulating, generally strongly depressed and similarly undulating
Weft: 3 shoots, wool, brown or light brown Z1 or cotton, light blue or white, Z5S, first and third shoots undulating, sometimes only slightly, second undulating stronger. The various colours and materials used in the wefts follow certain patterns which are available on request
Pile: wool, Z2S, in red, pink and yellow Z2-4S, asymmetrical open to the left, H30 x V14/cm.
Sides: Additional red wool yarn Z4-6 wound around two additional warps, the main weft sometimes passes around one additional warp, sometimes between both and the outermost knotted warp, passing over the bound wefts
Lower end: approx. 2-3cm. plainweave with white cotton Z6, warp threads left uncut and twisted together Z
Upper end: approx. 2cm. plainweave with red cotton Z6, 7-8 warps knotted together
