AN USHAK MEDALLION CARPET
WEST ANATOLIA, LATE 17TH CENTURY
The rust-red field with a ton-sur-ton angular blue palmette vine around a flaming hexagonal steel-blue panel containing palmette vine and arabesques around a brick-red ogival medallion issuing curling trefoil terminals, light blue arabesque pendants above and below, each of the four spandrels with a part green cusped lobed medallion containing arabesques, in a steel-blue border of rosettes alternating with paired flowerheads between light blue and red meandering leafy vine strpes, a short kilim strip at each end, some repiling, small repairs, even wear
Approximately 13ft.7in. x 8ft.1in. (414cm. x 246cm.)
Warp: white wool, Z2S, one strand white and one dark brown, ends reddish, slightly depressed, slightly undulating
Weft: two shoots, red and reddish wool, Z1, sometimes the first (and third) undulating, the second strongly undulating
Pile: wool, Z2S, knots symmetrical inclined to the left, H2.0 x V3.0/cm.
Ends: approx. 3-4cm. green wool flatwoven shoots, binding relation 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1
Remarks: lazy lines
