A GHIORDES PART COTTON CARPET
WEST ANATOLIA, 18TH CENTURY

The abrashed steel-blue carpet with fine flowering vine around diagonal rows of pomegranite fruit around a central concentric pistachio-green, brick-red and blue lozenge medallion containing flowering plants, the light blue spandrels with floral sprays alternating with stylised tulips, inner brick-red flowerhead and leafy vine frame, in a dark brown arcaded leafy border enclosing stylised pomegranites between lappet, blue flowering vine and angular meandering vine stripes, a blue kilim strip at each end, even wear, reduced in width at each side by about fifteen centimetres, small repairs
Approximately 12ft. x 7ft.11in. (366cm. x 241cm.)

Warp: wool, yellow, Z2S, slightly undulating
Weft: 2 shoots, undulating, wool, red, Z1
Pile: wool, Z2S, cotton, white, symmetrical inclining to the left, H3 x V3.6/cm.
Sides: Additional green silk shoot, S2Z, bound together with four additional warp threads, the foundation shoot wound around the first additional warp thread
Ends: flat woven, c. 0.5 cm. with red wool and c. 5-6cm. with blue-green wool, both Z1
Remarks: lazy lines

See the introductory essays for a brief discussion of Ghiordes rugs. In terms of structure and colouration, the current carpet belongs to the 'Basra-Ghiordes' group, but features a very very unusual design. This piece is also unusual with the Ghiordes group because of it large size.
