AN USHAK PRAYER RUG
WEST ANATOLIA, EARLY 19TH CENTURY
The pistachio-green field with vertical columns of arrowhead panels containing small floral motifs, the central larger panel with larger flowerheads and a stylised vase, the central and two side panels rising up into the upper blue panel containing diagonal rows of polychrome hooked vine, a large cross-panel above with a tulip-headed arcade, in a royal blue border of flowerheads and floral sprays between minor stripes, added kilim strip at each end, corroded brown, a few small old repairs, small touches of repiling
Approximately 5ft.3in. x 4ft.(160cm. x 122cm.)
Warp: white wool, Z2S, hardly to slightly depressed, undulating
Weft: two to three shoots in irregular order, red wool, Z1, the first (and third) undulating, the second more strongly undulating
Pile: wool, Z2S, knots symmetrical inclined to the left, H2.1 x V2.2/cm.
Remarks: in one area supplementary shoots next to three additional ones inbetween knots inserted between two rows of wefts
