AN USHAK MEDALLION CARPET
WEST ANATOLIA, SECOND HALF 17TH CENTURY

The deep brick-red field centering a large oxidized green hexagonal medallion and a smaller brick-red and yellow split-leaf arabesque-formed palmette and floral vinery medallion, all flanked by indigo vine tracery and flanked by sea-green palmette and arabesque quarter medallion spandrels, within an oxidized dark green border with deep brick floral motif cartouches and floral headed diamond medallions, an areas of corrosion wear, areas of repair throughout, small areas of reweaving.
Approximately 14ft. 1in. x 8ft. 7in. (429cm. x 261cm.)

Warp: ivory wool, Z2S, hardly depressed, slightly undulating
Weft: two shoots, red wool, Z2S, sometimes three shoots, the first (and third) undulating, the second strongly undulating
Pile: wool, Z2, knots symmetrical inclined to the left, H2.1 x V3.0/cm. Remarks: lazy lines
