Lot Essay

This unusual has been affectionally known by three generations of the Bernheimer family as the 'Der Sultanläufer' ('The Sultan's Runner'). This moniker came about through the belief that it was woven for an Ottoman Sultan. While this provenance is impossible to prove, the psuedo-military emblems with pendant crescent moons are unusual motifs that may indicate a special commission.
