AN ISFAHAN CARPET BORDER FRAGMENT

The indigo ground with a large polychrome palmette flanked by large polychrome split-leaf arabesques and floral vine all flanked by a rose floral meandering vine border and a smaller tangerine floral meander guard stripe, heavy losses to pile, repairs, slightly ragged ends and sides
Approximately 3ft. 10in. x 1ft. 11in. (117cm. x 58cm.)

Warp: ivory cotton, Z3S, slightly undulating and layered
Weft: 3 shoots, ivory cotton, Z2S
Pile: wool, Z2, the blue, yellow, red, grey white partly Z3, asymmetrical open to the left, H3.8 x V4.2/cm.

This border is superbly drawn; it must have come from a magnificent large carpet. As well as appearing on various spiralling vine and palmette carpets, a simpler version of this border can be seen on the Jaipur 'Strapwork' carpet (HALI 41, pp.36-37).
