EAST TURKESTAN, CIRCA 1880

The shaded aubergine field with a variety of flowerheads and chequered roundels around three pale lemon-yellow roundels containing similar motifs and small rosettes, the spandrels with key-pattern, in an aubergine border of diagonal polychrome swastika key-pattern panels between inner key-pattern and outer angular flowerhead vine and plain stripes, a kilim strip at one end, partial corrosion of browns, slight insect damage
Approximately 9ft.5in. x 5ft.3in. (286cm. x 160cm.)

Warp: white cotton, Z6S, at edges slightly depressed and slightly undulating, generally considerably depressed and undulating
Weft: 3 shoots, wool, brown or white Z1, dark brown and white strands Z2, first and third shoot undulating, second more so; the first two rows of shoots are white cotton, Z6S, and 2 X Z6S in the very first shoot
Pile: wool, Z2-3, asymmetrical open to the left, H2.6 x V2.0/cm.
Sides: additional violet, red and yellow wool yarn wound around two additional warps, main weft sometimes runs around one additional warp, sometimes between the two and the outermost knotted warp, passing over the other weft bindings
Lower end: approx. 2cm. of white cotton Z6S flatweave
