AN ALPUJARRA LOOP PILED PEASANT RUG
SOUTH SPAIN, 19TH CENTURY

The flatwoven ground with a blue hooked lozenge lattice enclosing panels with central red stellar flowerheads, in a flatwoven border of loop piled red, yellow and blue stellar flowerheads between polychrome barber-pole and red chevron stripes, a short kilim strip at each end, woven in three strips, very slight loss of pile in centre Approximately 7ft.8in. x 6ft.3in. (234cm. x 191cm.)

Warp: ivory flax, Z1, in areas of design strongly undulating
Weft: 2 shoots ivory flax, Z2, slightly undulating
Design wefts: looped wool, Z4, H1.8 x V2.0/cm.
Sides: formed of uncut main and design wefts
Ends: plainweave
