The famous Riley Nine was introduced in 1929 and was an immediate success story; the engine had the classic twin, high camshaft with hemispherical combustion chambers design and one that was to characterise Riley engines for the next thirty years. This four cylinder engine was later developed in six cylinder form and went on to contribute much to the success of ERA racing engines and subsequent British prestige. Riley themselves also achieved sporting success and throughout the '30s they were a true force to be reckoned with. Saloon models were equally desirable and the range included the Monaco, Lincock, Falcon, Kestrel and Ascot. There were even further derivatives and they were all keenly priced and well made.

This 1936 car began life originally as a 9hp Kestrel Saloon Special Series as confirmed by the chassis number sequence S66K. Today the car sports a pretty two-seat body with dickey which is believed to have been built by Empira, the Belgian coachbuilders. Under the bonnet is a 12/4 Series four cylinder engine, now fitted with twin SU carburettors, twin electric petrol pumps and a front-mounted oil cooler. The vendor's intention had been to race the car and a continuing improvement programme was under way prior to consignment to this sale. 18" wheels are fitted with near-new Dunlop Gold Seal tyres. The interior has light tan seats with complementary door panelling and a regular complement of instrumentation.

This Special has a particular charm of its own and would definitely appeal to the more sporting driver who appreciates the quality of Riley engineering. Bearing the interesting registration number DPJ 41, it carries a full twelve months MoT and is therefore ready to be enjoyed during the forthcoming summer months.
