The DB6 Aston Martin was announced at the London Motor Show in 1965 and represented the ultimate development of the DB4 and DB5 series. The wheelbase was extended by 3¾" over the DB5 whilst the roofline was raised and a new flip tail with integral spoiler introduced which reduced drag and aerodynamic lift. Consequently, the DB6 succeeded in offering greater leg and head room in both front and back seats. An enlarged oil cooler opening also appeared below the radiator grille and there were new split bumpers. With all these developments the DB6 became a comfortable four seater and was capable of high touring speeds. A ZF five speed gearbox or Borg Warner automatic transmission were available at no extra cost and Armstrong Selectaride rear shock absorbers were now standard equipment.

The car on offer today can only be described as in outstanding condition, having been comprehensively restored by marque experts Chapman Spooner Limited at a cost of £45,000. The present owner purchased the car in September 1987 and a year later asked Chapman Spooner to undertake a full road test report. Based on this report the decision was taken to completely restore the car and the work began in 1988/89. The engine was completely dismantled, whereupon it was found that the cylinder block needed replacing; a new unstamped block was ordered from Aston Martin (at a cost of £5,000) and fitted with a new set of pistons. The engine was totally rebuilt, whilst the gearbox was overhauled and an exchange torque converter unit was fitted. Meanwhile, the suspension was dismantled and rebuilt, as was the complete braking system and steering.

The body was stripped to bare metal prior to a complete re-paint and the engine bay similarly prepared before re-fitting the engine. The body panels were re-shaped as necessary, after which the car was re-painted in Aston Martin sage green. A complete re-trim was undertaken by Gary Wright of Newport Pagnell and the quality is, quite simply, excellent. The car has tan Connolly hide upholstery with matching door trim and Wilton carpeting. The sliding sunroof was completely re-trimmed and instrumentation and dashboard all restored. The rebuild continued through 1990 and 1991 and in March 1992 a 2,500 mile service was carried out by Chapman Spooner. On a rolling road test in 1993 peak power of 246bhp was produced at 5,200rpm with a maximum road speed reached of 121.5mph.

It almost goes without saying that the condition today is as near perfect as one could possibly expect. The quality of the re-build is outstanding and a credit to all those involved. The car has, of course, a current MoT certificate expiring in January 1997. This must surely be a golden opportunity to acquire an exquisite example of the DB6.
