Gold Coast
cover 1902 (15 Feb.) "Ackerman" envelope registered to Banbury bearing 2d. (2) and key-plate ½d. (2) cancelled "Dodowah/15.2.02" with the registered "R" in oval alongside. The cover was originally underfranked and the two ½d. stamps added later which partly cover an unframed "R" with manuscript "1" and "returned for stamps" in red ink; the reverse bears Accra (10.2) and (17.2) c.d.s. along with London and Oxford registered ovals; some soiling but still a most interesting cover and a late example of the manuscript cancellation. Note: A similarly returned cover is illustrated in Proud's book "THE POSTAL HISTORY OF GOLD COAST", here one stamp is dated "15.2.02" and two subsequent additions "22.2.02", also registered it shows the unframed "R" originally numbered "2"
