A French ormolu-mounted mahogany Commode a Vantaux
Late 19th/early 20th Century
With a breccia marble top with eared corners, above three frieze drawers, the central one with a lion mask, with a pair of doors below, centred by a roundel within foliate scrolls, the interior fitted with six drawers, the sides each with a roundel cast in high-relief within foliate scrolls, the corners each with a three-quarter fluted circular upright headed by acanthus, on toupie feet and foliate sabots

Lot Essay

The prototype for this commode, now in the Louvre, was originally provided for Louis XVI's Garde-Meuble in 1786 for use in Queen Marie-Antoinette's apartment at Fontainbleau (see F. J. B. Watson, Louis XVI Furniture, London, 1960, fig. 45).
