THE PROPERTY OF A LADY Sold in Aid of Charity (Lots 1-104) This collection, mainly formed in the 1950s and sold in aid of a charity, reflects the owner's interest in a widely varying range of styles and periods. The passion for collecting was stimulated by two great figures in English decoration of the 20th Century; R.W. Symonds, Esq. (d. 1958) the great expert and adviser on Georgian furniture in England and America in his day, and John Fowler, Esq. (d. 1977) founder and partner of Colefax & Fowler and arguably the most influencial interior decorator of the 20th Century. The majority of pieces acquired on the advise of Symonds, except for lots 26, 46 and 103 in this sale, were sold in the Important English Furniture sale on 16 November 1995 (lots 61-67), while John Fowler's influence is discernable in the delicate combination of eclectic objects from all parts of the world and from all periods. A trade card of 1811 from Johnston, Brooks & Co., Fetter Lane, London, illustrates an oil lamp of closely related design (illustrated in J. Bourne and V. Brett, Lighting in the Domestic Interior, London, 1991, p. 133, illus. 448).
