A GERMAN GREEN AND GILT-JAPANNED BUREAU-CABINET

Decorated overall with chinoiserie scenes of water landscapes with buildings and bridges and people following various pursuits, the floral sprays divided by trellis patterns, the scrolled broken pediment centred by a spirally-gadrooned finial, the two doors with arched panels enclosing a fitted red and gilt-japanned interior with a central door enclosing a shelf and flanked by pigeon-holes, above three variously-sized drawers and two candle-slides, the hinged fall-front enclosing a red and gilt-japanned fitted interior with a central door flanked by upright compartments and a pierced shaped divide with three further stepped drawers, the serpentine lower section with three long drawers flanked by sides with brass carrying-handles, on bun feet, the reverse with depository, label indistinctly inscribed L.G. Wortan, later japanned onto a basically mid-18th Century oak carcase 45in. (114cm.) wide; 91in. (231cm.) high; 22½in. (57cm.) deep
