The chairs' inverted lyre-shaped backs incorporate tied and fretted-ribbon splats that compare to A. Hepplewhite & Co.'s Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788. Related splat patterns feature on Louis XVI chairs bearing the brands of Jean-Baptiste Boulard and Georges Jacob (G. Janneau, Les Sièges, Paris, 1967, fig. 306; and P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIII Siècle, Paris, 1989, p. 425, fig. D). A closely related set of six chairs from the collection of M. Mica Salabert was sold, Ader Tajan, Paris, 8 June 1993, lot 102.
