The eared moulded breakfront rectangular white marble top above a secrétaire-drawer simulated as three panelled drawers framed by a moulded and cock-beaded border, enclosing a brown leather writing- surface, drawers and wells, the two central drawers decorated sans traverse and flanked by two doors enclosing one shelf, the channelled and stop-fluted rounded angles and tapering legs headed by foliate and beaded mounts and with upswept acanthus-leaf caps, one berried-laurel ring-handle missing, later escutcheons, stamped once F.SCHEY, inscribed to the back 445, minor losses to veneer, the marble top possibly later

Lot Essay

Fidelys Schey, maître in 1777

This commode represents Schey's later work towards the end of the reign of Louis XVI. His oeuvre was prolific, despite the relative shortness of his career (d. 1788) and he delivered several games tables to the Château de Fontainebleau in 1786, as well as a Table à écrire which was sold by Lord Elphinstone in these Rooms, 9 June 1994, lot 55.
