Rikhard Zommer's works have been previously catalogued as R. Sommer or R. Bommer. The large signature on this picture reads Rikhard Zommer, a Russian artist who studied at the Academy of Arts, St. Petersburg. He won the lesser medal in 1886, the lesser and greater medals in 1890 and in 1891 the large encouragement medal. He worked in Central Asia in 1890 to early 1900 and in Georgia 1912-1917 where he was one of the organisers of the Tiflis Society of Fine Arts, Armenia and Azerbaidzhan. From 1892 he exhibited at the St. Petersburg society of artists such titles as Flight of the Kirgiz (1894), Bazaar in Tashkent (1898), Ruins of the Palace of Bibi Khanym (1898), Chaikhana (1899) and Street in Samarkand (1906).
Zommer's works are in the state Russian Museum (Bay Horse), Omsk Museum of Art and History (Horses at a Watering Hole), Leningrad Museum of History, of Religion and Atheism (Kokand Bazaar), Koz'modemiansk Gallery (Kirgiz Aul), Tula Regional Art Museum (Turkomen), Azerbaidzhan State Museum of Art (At the Spring), Uzbek State Museum of Art (Horse Race, 1895), Samarkand-Uzbek Museum of History, of Culture and Art (Travellers' Evening Prayers, 1895), and the Armenian State Art Museum (Vegetable Market, 1905, and Flock of Sheep, 1914).
