Lot Essay

The setting is the artist's native town of Tenby in Pembrokeshire, South Wales. The view is taken from the North Sands, just below Morton High Street, looking towards the Harbour. The figure in the hat is Gwen's younger sister Winifred who is the subject of the artist's earliest paintings. This work is recorded as only the second picture that Gwen John painted and is considered to be unique in the artist's painting oeuvre. (see C. Langdale, loc. cit.).
