Lot Essay

The hilts of this and the preceding lot belong to the well-known group made in an unidentified workshop in North Indian for export to Europe, probably via the East India Company. This example is unusual in having the royal monogram - that of George III - on the blade. See A.V.B. Norman, The Rapier and Small-Sword, 1980, p. 348
