AN ENGLISH BASKET-HILTED BACKSWORD
CIRCA 1650
With straight blade double-edged towards the point and with double fullers along the back edge on each side stamped 'Peter Henchels Me Fecit Solingen', iron 'mortuary' hilt comprising a broad guard pierced with numerous small circular holes, the front turned up and linked to the pommel by three vertical bars (repaired), the space between partly filled by diagonal S-shaped scrolls, globular pommel with button, and wooden grip (binding missing, rust patinated overall)
