A GERMAN SWORD RAPIER

MUNICH, CIRCA 1600-20

With broad sharply tapering double-edged blade of flattened diamond section, the recessed ricasso struck on each face with a mark, the russet iron hilt (originally blued) comprising assymetrical guard with two outer side-rings linked to the knuckle-guard by a curved bar, inner diagonal trifurcated bar, arms, and downcurved rear quillon with disc terminal, pommel of flattened barrel shape, and wire-bound wooden grip (slight damage)
33in. (83.8cm.) blade

Lot Essay

The marks on the ricasso are those of Wolfgang Stantler of Munich. The sword belongs to a group made for a Bavarian corps, probably the Munich Town Guard. Many examples are preserved in the Bayerisches Arméemuseum, Ingolstadt
