A 22-BORE TURKISH MIQUELET-LOCK CARBINE

18TH CENTURY, THE BARREL CIRCA 1730-40

With gold-inlaid swamped octagonal sighted barrel cut with eight grooves and retained by four silver barrel bands, the breech with two Spanish-style maker's stamps of Franz Breitenfelder of Carlsbad (Neue Støckel 108, 7142), gold-inlaid standing back-sight pierced with two apertures, plain iron tang with engraved silver sheet apron, plain lock stamped with maker's mark of 'Ali Beg(?)', maple full stock inlaid with pierced and engraved silver panels decorated with designs of strapwork and foliage, swelling faceted butt, the rear section of plain wood, iron button trigger, and original iron ramrod (barrel and lock lightly pitted)

Lot Essay

Franz Breitenfelder was apprenticed in Vienna in 1716. By 1722 he had moved to Carlsbad and was a master gunmaker. He is last recorded in 1751. It is of interest that he enjoyed an export trade to Turkey for barrels in the Turkish fashion
