A 25-BORE AUSTRIAN OR BOHEMIAN FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOL

With etched twist barrel in the Turkish manner with encrusted silver and gold decoration throughout its length, and silver fore-sight, the breech with two stamps, the larger with the maker's name in illegible Arabic script, silver-damascened tang, signed flat bevelled lock engraved with a reclining sportsman and his dog, and on the tail with a dead stag and boar, the pan with water drain and chiselled fence (the steel probably a working replacement), moulded lightly carved full stock (minor cracks), full gilt-bronze mounts (gilding worn) cast and chased with rococo decoration in relief against a punched ground and including an apron at the barrel tang, the side-plate involving two horsemen and a martial trophy, and the butt-cap a Classical figure, probably Mars, gilt-brass fore-end cap and ramrod-pipes, and brass-tipped ramrod (some wear throughout)

Lot Essay

The construction of the lock is unusual. To strip the lock the cock is removed, revealing a screw beneath it, which allows the removal of the tumbler bridle, revealing a screw which retains the pan. Once the pan has been removed the mainspring can be taken out, and the steel and steel-spring detached
