A FINE AND RARE PAIR OF SAXON SPORTING CROSSBOWS
CIRCA 1730-40, ALMOST CERTAINLY BY JOHANN GOTTFRIED HÄNISCH OF DRESDEN
Each with slender bow struck with a mark and with original bindings, cord and pom-poms of blue and yellow silk, walnut tiller inlaid in finely engraved staghorn with rococo scrollwork and foliage, and on the cheek-piece with an oval shield (arms erased) flanked by lion supporters with a count's coronet above and the cross of the Prussian Order of the Black Eagle (instituted 17 January 1701) below, iron loop with traces of gilding, horn bolt-clip (one incomplete), iron nut chiselled with a grotesque mask in relief, set trigger, iron trigger-guard, and horn butt-plate, one numbered 'No. 5' and the other 'No. 6'
