A BRITISH OFFICER'S SILVER-HILTED SWORD

THE LOCKET SIGNED 'DRURY CUTLER TO HIS MAJESTY. STRAND', LONDON SILVER HALLMARKS FOR 1804

With tapering hollow-ground spadroon blade double-edged towards the point, etched on each face of the forte with a spray of foliage and crowned double monogram of George III, and along the back with the inscription 'Warrented Never To Fail 1790', stirrup hilt with back-strap and pommel-cap in one, and knuckle-guard with a ring for a sword-knot, in original wooden scabbard covered with black leather (chape replaced) with signed locket, silver maker's mark IR

Lot Essay

The inscription on the back of the blade indicates that it was made by the famous Thomas Gill of Birmingham. See European Swords & Daggers in the Tower of London, 1974, plate 72 b
