Lot Essay

Queen Victoria was an enthusiastic amateur artist and continued to paint and draw until her last years. According to her Journal, she stayed at the Glassalt Shiel, near Balmoral, from 27 to 30 October 1875, but there are no references to her sketching during the visit. Nor are there any Scottish views dating from this month in the Royal Collection, although there are a number made the previous September (in volumes K43, K46 and K47).

We are grateful to the Hon. Mrs Roberts, Curator of the Print Room at the Royal Library, Windsor Castle, for her help in preparing this entry.
