Lot Essay

According to Callow's diary, he first went to Honfleur in 1835. The picturesqueness of this fishing port must have appealed to him for he exhibited views of the subject at the Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1858, 1867, 1874, 1877 and 1889. The present watercolour is most likely to be the one exhibited in 1874 under the title 'Fishing Boats leaving Honfleur - Early Morning'.
