Lot Essay

The Ponte Cestio was built in 46 BC by Pretore Cestio Epulone and was rebuilt in 368 AD. The cupola shown is that of the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere. Another version of this watercolour is at the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery, Bedford.
