Lot Essay

Nash studied architectural drawing with Thomas Malton, Jun. He began his career as an architectural draughtsman, working for engravers. In 1807 he was appointed architectural draghtsman to the Society of Antiquaries for whom he worked for many years. Nash is known to have visited Switzerland in 1816 but this drawing is the only known record of a visit to Italy.
