Lot Essay

Roberts travelled up the Rhine in the summer of 1830 and this finished watercolour was presumably done from a sketch made on that tour. The Palace or Castle of the Electors of the Palatinate was built during the Renaissance not long after which it was largely destroyed by French troops. It still remains as a magnificent ruin. It has particular associations for the English as the home of the 'Winter Queen', Charles I's sister, the mother of Prince Rupert, and the link between the Stuart and the Hanoverian dynasties.
