Lot Essay

Roberts was in Cairo 30 September to 6 October 1838 and again 21 December to 7 February 1839.
The island of Rhoda is seen looking up the Nile at Cairo. The gardens were created for Ibrahim Pasha by a Mr. Trail, sent for the purpose by the Horticultural Society of London. The island is best known as the site of the Nilometer, said to have been constructed at the place where Moses was abandoned in the bullrushes.
