Lamplough studied at the Chester School of Art and later lectured at Leeds School of Art. Early in his career his subject matter was architectural and Venetian, however from 1902 he concentrated on North African, particularly Egyptian scenes. He wrote and illustrated Cairo and its Environs, 1909, Winter in Egypt, Egypt and How to see it, The Flight of the Turkish Invaders and illustrated P. Loti's La Morte de Philae and Egypt, 1909.
