Nebulae Ranae Equites Acharnes Vespae Aves Pax Contionantes, 1v-8v preliminary texts including letters by Aldus and Mousouros, and a life of the author); α-γ8 δ10 (Plutus, δ10v blank); ε-κ8 (Nebulae, κ7v-8v blank); λ-ξ8 o10 (Ranae); π-ψ8 φ6 (Equites); χ-ώ Α8 (Acharnes); Β-Ε8 Z6 (Vespae); H-Λ8 Μ4 (Aves); Ν-Ο8 Π10 (Pax, misbound between Equites and Acharnes); Ρ-Σ8 Τ6 (Contionantes, Τ4v-5r sheet register, Τ5v quire register, colophon, Τ6 blank). 347 (of 348, without the final blank) leaves. Mostly 41-42 lines of commentary surrounding varying numbers of lines of text. Types: 1:146Gk (text), 7:114Gk (commentary), 2:114R (title, dedication, etc.). Woodcut floral and interlaced headlines and initials. (A few small wormholes, one touching text, repaired in first leaf.) Early 19th-century half sheep (slightly rubbed). Provenance: two sets of MS. glosses in the margins, the earlier one in a particularly accomplished Greek hand; Viscount Mersey (booklabel).
EDITIO PRINCEPS of nine of Aristophanes' eleven extant comedies. Aldus had intended to include a tenth play, the Lysistrata, but was unable to find a manuscript containing the complete text.
