CHAMPOLLION, Jean François (1790-1832). Précis du système hiéroglyphique des anciens Égyptiens. Paris: Imprimerie Royale, Treuttel et Würtz, 1824.

2 volumes, 8° (242 x 160mm). 48 lithographic plates, some folding. Original blue paper wrappers, printed paper labels, (spines slightly worn, splitting in vol.I), uncut and largely unopened.

The first comprehensive interpretation of hieroglyphs, which made it possible to read ancient Egyptian inscriptions and literature. This was based on the decipherment of the Rossetta Stone. The present work was preceded by a short (50pp) memoir to Bon-Joseph Dacier, the secretary of the Académie Royale des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres in 1822. It was this Précis however, published at the expense of the French government, which made the study of ancient Egyptian civilization possible. Cf. En Français dans le Texte, 234. (2)
