The first comprehensive interpretation of hieroglyphs, which made it possible to read ancient Egyptian inscriptions and literature. This was based on the decipherment of the Rossetta Stone. The present work was preceded by a short (50pp) memoir to Bon-Joseph Dacier, the secretary of the Académie Royale des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres in 1822.
