FOSSATI, Giorgio (1706-1778). Memorie della vita del glorioso patriarca San Guiseppe. Venice: Carlo Pecora, 1750.

2° (366 x 252mm). Title printed in red and black, title vignette printed in red, frontispiece comprises an engraved scene in sepia within an engraved border in black, 20 engraved plates (numbered I-XIX, LXV) printed in black, red, sepia, ochre and green, one engraved headpiece and initial in red, all by Fossati, decorative woodcut initials and tailpieces. Contemporary paper boards backed with marbled-paper.

A splendid example of 18th-century color printing. Fossati is best known as an architect and designer of theatrical sets. Morazzoni calls for 3 headpieces, but it appears that numerous variations exist among copies of the Memorie. For example, the Saks copy (Christie's, 10 June 1981) had 3 headpieces and 19 plates, and the frontispiece was printed in black within an ochre border. The present copy has one headpiece and 20 plates, and its frontispiece is printed in red within a black border. Morazzoni 232.
