2 volumes, 8° (162 x 105mm). CONTEMPORARY PRESENTATION BINDINGS FOR POPE CLEMENT XI, red morocco, profusely tooled in gilt, on sides outer roll-tooled border, cornerpieces composed of large leafy volutes, partly pointillé, and small roundels and fleurons, in centre the Pope's arms surmounted by keys and tiara, surrounded by pointillé volutes and a field semé of small stars, spine with five raised bands and gilt compartments decorated with small tools, marbled paper liners, edges gilt and gauffered, (very minor abrasion on upper cover of vol.I). Stamp of Cardinal Alessandro Albani on titles.

A VERY FINE SET OF BINDINGS BY A WELL-KNOWN NEAPOLITAN ATELIER, inspired by French 17th-century models and possibly employing French craftsmen. They used a distinctive set of leafy volute tools, partly pointillé. Some other bindings by this workshop, sometimes heightened with enamel colours are: 1. Abbey Sale, III lot 2127; 2. Oldham, Shrewsbury School Library Bindings, plate 29; 3. According to the title the work was first printed in Madrid in 1687, but it is not in Palau. (2)
