The Italian text engraved throughout: title, dedication leaf, 'Discorso preliminare' leaf, a list of the Monkey family on 1 leaf, 3 preliminary plates with integral text beneath, 70 plates with integral text beneath numbered I-LXX, 20 leaves of text with 5 vignette decorations. (Slight browning to Italian title.) Contemporary half sheep (slightly scuffed).

A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. An early monograph on monkeys, preceded only by J.B. Audebert's Histoire Naturelle des singes et des makis (1798-9, 63 plates) and P.A.Latreille's Histoire naturelle... des singes (1801, 79 plates). The German and Italian titles acknowledge that the work relies on their discoveries as well as those of Buffon, Cuvier, Geoffroy, Daubenton and Lacépède. Nissen ZBI 2080.
