3 volumes, 8° (201 x 125mm). Half-titles, single leaf errata at back of vol.III. (Small tear to lower blank margin of pp.189-190 in vol.II, light old dampstaining in vol.II.) Contemporary half sheep, red and green lettering-piece (extremities very lightly scuffed).
A FINE COPY OF THE RARE FIRST EDITION (first issue with 'questa storia' reading on line 13, p.378 in vol.III) of THE MOST CELEBRATED ITALIAN NOVEL OF THE 19TH CENTURY, based on Scott's The Bride of Lammermoor (first published in 1819). This original edition of 2000 copies sold out within two months and numerous reprints quickly followed - there were nine published in 1827 alone. The work was continually revised by Manzoni in successive editions, until the definitive edition was published in 1840. Parenti Bibliotheca Manzoniana 33; Brunet III, 1388. (3)
