MASCARDI, Vitale. Festa fatta in Roma, alli 25 di Febraio MDCXXXIV. Rome: Mascardi, 1635.

4° (176 x 238mm). Etched title-page and 12 plates by F. Collignon after designs by Andrea Sacchi, 11 double-page, 1 folding. (Traces of damp in lower margin of some, not affecting text or plates.) 18th-century Italian half vellum, tree-pattern paper-covered boards (split to head of spine).

One of the finest Italian fête books of the early 17th century, describing the festivities sponsored by Cardinal Antonio Barberini (brother of Pope Urban VIII) and designed by Marchese Cornelio Bentivoglio for the visit of Prince Alexander-Charles of Poland to Rome. The plates include depictions of the Prince's entry into Rome, a ballet in the Palazzo Barberini, a decorated barge holding an entire orchestra, and on the large folding plate a spectacular bird's-eye view of the Piazza Navona where a tournament is being held, while the barge is being drawn into the square. The text describes the proceedings in detail, including the librettos for the representations and their allegorical significance. Vinet 771; Berlin Kat. 3044; Cicognara 1440.
