RAMUSIO, Giovanni Battista (1485-1557). Primo volume, & Terza editione [Secondo Volume...; Terzo Volume...] delle Navigationi et Viaggi. Venice: Heirs of Luc' Antonio Giunta, June 1563-1558-1556.

3 volumes, 2° (295 x 199mm). Final blank in vol.I. 7 double-page or folding woodcut maps or plans, 54 woodcut illustrations (10 full-page, one of these folding). (Vol.I: without three double-page copper-engraved maps, title laid down, upper margins close-shaved, occasionally touching the headlines, tear at inner margins of ccc8-10 with loss of a few letters on ccc8; vol.II: 100mm tear in ee5, bifolium h3.6 duplicated; vol.III: repair at fold of one plan, the double-page map of the New World shaved with slight loss to caption at foot and with light marginal worming.) Old light brown morocco, panelled in blind, gilt lettering-pieces on spines (small sections chipped from head of spines of vols. II and III). Provenance: Pultio Sbarra (early inscription in vol.II).

Third edition of vol.I, FIRST EDITIONS of vols.II and III. A FINE SET but without the copper-engraved maps in volume I: 'Some copies of this volume may have been issued without them, as they are often lacking' (Sabin). Most of the third volume concerns the American continent, including Cartier's first voyage, and reports by Verazzano, Cortes, and others. It contains maps and illustrations depicting the natives and exotic fruits and plants: pineapple, maize and cacti. A fourth volume was to have been published but Ramusio's death in July 1557, and the fire at the Giunta printing office in November of the same year, prevented its publication and resulted in a reduction in the scope of vol.II. Sabin 67732; 67736; 67740. (3)
