SANNAZARO, Giacomo (1458-1530). Libro pastorale nominato Archadio. Milan: Giovanni Angelo Scinzenzeler, 9 January 1504.

4° in 8s (194 x 134mm). Woodcut device on title, one white-on-black woodcut initial. (A few marginal repairs, lightly soiled and waterstained.) 19th-century calf-backed boards, spine gilt with dark blue lettering-piece.

A very rare edition of one of the most popular Italian poems of the sixteenth century, of which more than sixty editions were printed. The first (pirated) edition appeared in Venice in 1502, causing the author to write to the city council requesting that the perpetrators should henceforward be made to work on a pig-farm. Gamba 888 ('Rara')
