A FINE COPY OF THE ONLY KNOWN WORK BY SAULO, AND THE FIRST USE OF THIS ATTRACTIVE WOODCUT. The cut was re-used in a work by Lorenzo de' Medici, Canzone a ballo, printed in Florence in 1533. It's use there led Kristeller (Early Florentine Woodcuts no. 283) to mistakenly state that the work was printed by Cartolaio, since the woodcut incorporates the printer's armillary sphere device and motto. Cartolaio is known to have been active in Florence only between 1507 and 1519. The poem, written in ottava rima, tells the story of the young poet, Pier Saulo Phantino, and his unhappiness in love.
