La vita & morte di sancto Giovanni Baptista. [Florence: ca. 1495-1500].

4° (205 x 136mm). Collation: [14] (1r title, 1v-4v text). 4 leaves, 36 lines, double-column. Type: 86R. Woodcut on title of John the Baptist standing, a cross in his left hand, his right hand pointing to a tree in which a hatchet has been fixed, within a fine white-on-black woodcut border, one lombard initial on verso of the first leaf. Late 19th-century tan morocco.

APPARENTLY UNRECORDED. One of at least five editions of this text printed at Florence at the end of the 15th century, it is a short poem on the life and death of John the Baptist in ottava rima. It appears to belong to a small group of works printed with an unassigned Florentine type. Two other works from this group in the British Library are also Italian poetry in ottava rima (La schiatta de'Reali di Francia and Caccia di Belfiore); they share format and lay-out with the present edition, and the woodcuts show stylistic similarities. See BMC VI 694-5 (Group A).
