This imaginary animal has some resemblance to the shy, gentle tapir, whose night-prowling habits may account for the tradition of the baku eating up nightmares and other bad dreams. But the baku is more formidable than the tapir, and besides this light diet can eat anything, including rocks and heavy iron blocks.
