Lot Essay

The mask is illustrated in Iida, Katchumen Mononofu no kaso, (Tokenshunju Shimbunsha, Tokyo, 1991), p. 107, pl. 89, and was formerly the property of Arashiyama Museum. .

Kotokuraku is one of humorous masks of Gigaku as Shoko. The mouth with a protruding lower part and loosely closed lips are characteristics of Kotokuraku mask. It usually has narrow eyes.
