The sitter was the daughter of Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Burlington. In 1665 she married Lawrence Hyde, 1st Earl of Rochester. Another portrait of the sitter by Lely, with slight variations, is in the Royal Collection (see O. Millar, Tudor, Stuart and Early Georgian Pictures in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, London, 1963, p. 126, no. 262, pl. 115). The 1st Earl of Clarendon formed a remarkable collection of portraits which was divided between his London house in Piccadilly and Cornbury in Oxfordshire.
