Lot Essay

Mrs Pinto (née Charlotte Brent) was the daughter of a fencing master and alto singer. She sang in a number of different productions - performing in Tom Jones on 14 January 1768. In the Autumn of 1766 she became the second wife of Thomas Pinto. Despite acquiring a substantial fortune during her lifetime, she died in poverty on 10 April 1802.

Mr Mattocks was married to Isabella (1746-1826), daughter of the low comedian Lewis Hallam. Her acting career outshone his own - he, himself, was more of a singer than an actor. It is said that their marriage was not a happy one
