Lot Essay

Charles Heathcote Tatham first published the design, on which these stools are based, in his Etchings of Ancient Ornamental Architecture drawn from the Originals in Rome and Other Parts of Italy during the years 1794, 1795 and 1796, 1799, pl. 46. Tatham's design, however, is for a marbled and draped stool (see F. Collard, Regency Furniture, Woodbridge, 1985, p.52, 55).
A similar stool was sold annonymously, in these Rooms, 19 April 1990, lot 37.
